Kevin Byard’s Bears Return Gives Patriots Personnel Insight

Kevin Byard is sharing what he remembers about the Bears with Patriots coaches and players before Thursday’s game in Chicago. His two seasons there included a captaincy and time practicing against Caleb Williams.

Kevin Byard’s Bears Return Gives Patriots Personnel Insight - New England Patriots

Kevin Byard returns to Chicago on Thursday as the New England Patriots prepare to face his former team, the Bears, according to The Portland Press Herald. The safety is sharing what he remembers about Chicago’s personnel with Patriots coaches and players.

Byard spent two seasons with the Bears, including time as a captain alongside quarterback Caleb Williams. His experience gives New England’s preparation a firsthand perspective on players he practiced with and competed against, though it does not guarantee an advantage in the matchup.

“I’m giving the coaches and the players as much as I can,” Byard said Tuesday, according to the Press Herald. “As far as personnel, anything I can kind of remember.” He said he was looking forward to returning to Soldier Field and playing in front of Chicago fans.

Kevin Byard’s Bears Experience Gives Patriots Personnel Insight

Chicago signed Byard to a two-year deal in 2024 after he spent the previous season with Philadelphia. The Bears selected him as a captain in both of his seasons with the team, giving him an established role in the locker room as the roster and coaching staff changed around him.

His time in Chicago included a difficult rebuilding stretch. The Bears fired coach Matt Eberflus after 12 games during a season that ended with a 10-game losing streak. Under new coach Ben Johnson the following season, Chicago improved, and Byard produced one of the strongest individual seasons of his career.

Byard led the National Football League in interceptions last season and earned the third All-Pro selection of his career. That production came during his final season in Chicago, before he joined the Patriots.

Byard Practiced Against Caleb Williams for Two Seasons

Williams and Byard were fellow captains in Chicago for both of Byard’s seasons there. The safety also practiced against the quarterback during that span, giving him direct familiarity with Williams’ preparation and movement in practice.

Williams described Byard as a “super savvy vet” and said the safety studies film, moves well and understands route concepts. Williams added that Byard remains fast despite his experience in the league.

Those comments reflect a relationship built while they were teammates, rather than an assessment of how their matchup will play out Thursday. Williams said facing Byard and the Patriots’ defense would challenge him and Chicago’s receivers to execute and complete passes while maintaining the Bears’ offensive identity.

Johnson also praised Byard’s fit in New England. “You can tell he really fits their defense well in terms of the communication and what they’re asking him to do,” the Bears coach said, according to the Press Herald.

Byard’s First Six Patriots Games

Byard has not intercepted a pass through the Patriots’ first six games. That statistic stands in contrast to his league-leading interception total from last season, but it does not change the experience he can share about Chicago’s personnel or his history practicing against Williams.

Williams said he would be watching Byard during the matchup. Byard, in turn, praised the quarterback’s mentality and willingness to fight for his team, and said he was excited to play against him.

Patriots-Bears Matchup Returns Byard to Soldier Field

Byard said he enjoyed playing at Soldier Field and in front of Bears fans. “It’s going to be an electric environment,” he said, describing the atmosphere he expects on his return to Chicago.

He also expressed respect for the Bears and for Williams, while hoping the Patriots’ defense can have a strong performance. The Patriots and Bears are scheduled to play in Chicago on Thursday, with Byard carrying his familiarity with the former team into New England’s preparation.
