A.J. Brown Returns to Patriots Practice After Ankle Injury

A.J. Brown returned to Patriots practice Wednesday after missing four games with a high ankle sprain. His 21-day window to be activated has begun, but practice does not mean he is cleared to play.

A.J. Brown Returns to Patriots Practice After Ankle Injury - New England Patriots

A.J. Brown returned to New England Patriots practice Wednesday, Oct. 14, after missing four games with a high ankle sprain, the Press Herald reported. New England now has 21 days to activate the wide receiver from injured reserve or place him on season-ending injured reserve.

The practice return marks a step in Brown’s recovery, not a roster activation or confirmation that he will play in a game. Brown became eligible to return after sitting out the Patriots’ previous four games.

Cornerback Christian Gonzalez also practiced after missing the previous two games with a shoulder issue. Offensive lineman Marcus Bryant returned to practice after being placed on injured reserve during the preseason.

A.J. Brown Patriots Practice Starts a 21-Day Window

Brown’s return to practice opens the period in which the Patriots must decide whether to activate him. The team has 21 days from his return to practice to move him off injured reserve; otherwise, he must remain on season-ending injured reserve.

That deadline is separate from Brown’s game availability. Taking part in practice does not itself mean he has been activated, cleared to play or assigned a return date. The update establishes that the process has begun, while the roster decision remains a separate step.

Brown’s practice return follows an injured-reserve stint for a high ankle sprain. He had not played since suffering the injury in New England’s season opener against Seattle.

How Brown’s Ankle Injury and Absence Unfolded

Brown injured his ankle in the second half of the Patriots’ 13-10 loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Sept. 9, according to the Press Herald. He left early in the third quarter after an incomplete pass from quarterback Drake Maye.

Brown had three catches for 26 yards before leaving the game. His absence then extended across four contests while he recovered from the high ankle sprain.

The Patriots went 3-1 during that stretch, the Press Herald reported. That record provides context for the team’s run without Brown, though his practice return does not yet establish when he could rejoin the lineup.

Other Patriots Return to Practice as Receivers Adjust

Gonzalez’s return to practice gives New England another player working back from an absence. The cornerback had missed the two games before Wednesday with a shoulder issue, while Bryant also returned after spending time on injured reserve following a preseason ankle injury.

The receiving group has also dealt with another roster loss. Mack Hollins went on injured reserve the previous week with a calf injury, according to the Press Herald.

New England’s receivers recorded six touchdown catches during Brown’s absence, the Press Herald reported. Romeo Doubs, DeMario “Pop” Douglas, Kyle Williams and Efton Chism were among the receivers who helped carry the passing game during that period.

Brown’s return to practice comes as the Patriots manage those changes at receiver, but it does not establish a new lineup or show that he is ready to take Hollins’ place. The 21-day activation window is the immediate roster consequence.

Maye and Vrabel Welcome Brown Back

Head coach Mike Vrabel said Brown had stayed engaged with the team while rehabbing. “I think he’s stayed engaged,” Vrabel said, according to the Press Herald, pointing to Brown’s routine, presence around teammates and focus on rehabilitation.

Maye described Brown’s return to the huddle as welcome. “It’s a warm welcome in the huddle to have him back in there,” Maye said. He also said Brown had been closely following the games and noted that the receiver’s attention to detail showed how much he cared.

Safety Kevin Byard called Brown a “huge boost” and a No. 1 receiver, according to the Press Herald. Byard said Brown’s talent could add another dimension to a passing game that had been playing well.

Maye threw for a season-high 374 yards and four touchdowns against the Las Vegas Raiders the previous week, the Press Herald reported. He said the Patriots have multiple playmakers and that spreading the ball among them could make the offense difficult for defenses.

Brown is now back at practice, and New England’s 21-day window has started. His next milestone is activation from injured reserve; until then, the practice return should not be treated as confirmation of game availability.
